The environment and Clairefontaine

Protecting the environment is a vital principle of the paper industry. Environmental conservation is totally integrated into the corporate strategy. There is no doubt that "Clairefontaine" is the best guarantee of commitment in this all important field.

Clairefontaine contributes to the dynamic, environment friendly management of European and North American forests through the use of cellulose fibres from tree thinning and sawmill waste. Other stock comes from trees grown in the tropics. Maintaining these forests plays an important role in the regulation of carbon dioxide. While they are growing, trees develop a large amount of biomass, an important factor in the fixing of carbon dioxide.

Water - Power

Clairefontaine was one of the first French companies to be awarded the "Water Trophy" for its facilities in 1988. Wastewater is sent through a high performance biological treatment station before it is returned to the river. The resulting sludge, which is isolated and recuperated, represents 1.5% of the paper made in the mill. It is used as fertiliser in the agricultural sector.

The paper industry consumes a huge amount of energy. The paper machines at Clairefontaine require 50 tonnes of steam per hour or 12 000 kWatts of electricity. To optimise its needs, Clairefontaine recently built a cogeneration unit next to its thermal power plant, consisting of two gas turbines and a waste-heat boiler. Clairefontaine now supplies 80% of its own electricity.

Recycling

Clairefontaine paper is 100% recyclable, producing fibres of excellent quality. All the paper made in the mill during the various stages of development is systematically recycled.
