Quality

The Clairefontaine signature

For 150 years, one of our strengths has been the quality of our products. This quality is closely linked to the Clairefontaine brand image. To offer the best quality on the market for all the specialities we produce is of prime importance to us.

In order to do this, a whole combination of measures has been put in place :
  • Before production : by strict selection of our raw materials : resistant white paper pulp from sustainably managed forests, ultra white precipitated calcium carbonate, quality additives,
  • By different controls at the time of delivery, and quality control partnerships with our suppliers,
  • By constantly improved means of production  (paper machines, conversion machines) for quality, productivity and reduced rate of scrapped goods,
  • By online measures and regulation systems which limit variations inherent to any form of production.
  • By taking samples from each reel produced for subsequent analysis in our quality control laboratory:

Visual control, of course (sheet formation, possible flaws or impurities), but also, thanks to high-performance laboratory equipment measuring different characteristics, in particular :

             - mechanical characteristics (resistance, tear strength, burst strength),
             - optical characteristics (whiteness or shade, opacity),
             - texture (substance, thickness, stiffness, smoothness or roughness),
             - writing or printing characteristics (sizing, permeability, stability during printing or copying),
  • By taking samples during conversion of the paper into cut size reams, folio sheets or rolls in order to check the quality of the cut and wrapped paper as it will be delivered to our customers : good trimming, respect of size, absence of cutting dus.And packaging evolves in order to always better protect and present our papers
  • By a precise analysis of the causes of complaints or comments from our customers and the setting up of corrective action whose efficiency is controlled,
  • Finally by the formation and commitment of all to quality in order to fully satisfy our customers .
“The quality of all of our articles can be measured. We are uncompromising on the quality aspect of our production", confirms Michel Febvet, sales director of Papeteries de Clairefontaine.

On top of that, we have a permanent innovative approach, which allows us not only to better reply to the expectations of the market and of our customers, but also to launch innovative new products : graphical arts papers, ecological papers, tinted papers, high speed printing papers ...

The ISO 14001 certification logo has nothing to do with quality !!!! Proof of this requirement, Clairefontaine obtained ISO 9001 certification in 1997. Granted by an independent body, it certifies the quality management system. Even better, the quality imposed by Clairefontaine has become the reference on the European market.

Research and development

The last decades have witnessed a big evolution in paper printing techniques and in the quality needs of users.

Since the Seventies, Clairefontaine has been a pioneer in xerographic printing papers. The wide spreading of this technology gave birth to a new generation of office papers.

With laser printing, a fundamental evolution is the generalization of colour rendition both in the office and in graphical arts.

Inkjet priting is now also part of our everyday life. It is used by most personal computers, and also for high speed machines

What papers, for tomorrow ? For our customers ?
How to use them ? On which machines ?

This research stems from frequent contact with our customers and with suppliers of our conversion machinery and printers, but also from old technology.

We thus invent the identity card of a new paper.

With our suppliers, we look for suitable materials which we test in laboratory trials on experimental machines or in real conditions on our paper machine. Upon request the CTP (French Technical Paper Centre)  helps us in our research.

Once the paper is defined, our production teams and laboratory make sure of its quality and regularity.

Our recent developments are examples of the balance between the expecations of the market and our strategy :
  • Clairmail, a paper which consumes less raw materials and less energy,
  • Dune, an environmental paper with no optical brighteners and which is TCF (without chlorine)
  • OCP (Offset Color Printing), with printing qualities and whiteness over and above established standards.
  • Equality, a new concept paper consisting of 50% recycled post-consumer + 50% virgin fiber certified for sustainable management of forests.
